About Steven Gotz
A short review of "RT.X2 Revealed (3.1)" DVD by Jeff Pulera.
Note: I have no financial interest in this product, I just found it useful.
OK, let's be honest, I am a bit lazy, and I like to sit back and learn everything I can as easily as possible. I am the type of person who reads the manual before turning on the camera or loading the software. But I said I am lazy, so having a DVD full of Windows Media files teach me all about the Matrox RT.X2 and how it is used with Premiere Pro is just a lot easier than reading through all of the documentation. Sure you have to already know all about Premiere Pro, as this DVD does not cover that, but it supplies most of the Matrox specific information you need.
I was asked to test drive the Matrox RT.X2, and it seems to me I was able to do a much better job of it after watching these tutorials.
The product isn't particulary inexpensive, but it seems to be worth every penny of the $99.99 they are charging. Sorry, but you missed the $69.99 introductory offer.
I realized how handy this DVD was the minute Jeff started discussing how the preferences and project settings should be set up. Just that alone was worth the time watching these video tutorials.
One thing I learned that I didn't expect was that all of those people who come on to the forums asking how to get at the second set of stereo tracks that their particular camera records can use the RT.X2 instead of using Scenalyzer to capture the extra audio. That might tip the balance of people sitting on the fence right there.
I might have figured out Matrox custom wipes on my own, but probably not. I don't use such things normally. However, Jeff made it look so easy, I might have to rethink my position on wipes.
The time spent on Keyframes in Premiere Pro was wasted, however. As I said before, we were expected to know all that already.
Apparently, there are differences between the sharpness of "Move and Scale" and "3D DVE". That's a shame, but it was a major value add to this DVD training. It might have taken me a while to figure that out on my own. I still can't see it with my footage though.
I think a little more time could have been spent on PIP borders since that is something Matrox has that Premiere Pro doesn't do as easily.
I believe that this video training should be mandatory for all Matrox users. If I ran Matrox, I would license it and include it in the box. But since I don't run Matrox, I suggest you spend the money and get the training before you even buy the Matrox RT.X2. (Edit: I found out that Matrox does include it with every RT.X2 - very smart move.)
Kudos to Jeff Pulera for his work on this product.
