About Steven Gotz

Reference Tone

Craig Howard (Shooter) of Shooter Film Company in Auckland, New Zealand, sent me an 1KHz tone, -18db, referenced to 0db on the mixer ( 18dB_Tone.wav )

This file placed on a timeline audio track should show  -18dB on the meter with volume sliders set at 0dB.  The zipped file size is 469KB

According to Craig:

This file will be useful to Premiere users ( and others) when a standard digital audio reference level is required as in outputting a broadcast dubb or sending media to a recording studio where their reference is -18db.

The professional broadcast and recording industry seems to use -18db (or -20db) as digital audio reference. Premiere Pro & Matrox generated tones are -12dB and -6db respectively.

In a Premiere Pro generated Bars and Tone clip - unlink media, delete audio and replace with -18db wav when this is required.

Tip: Export a Bars and Tone clip with this set up and save it for future use.
